UNIFIL Memorial in Tyre

Schalkhaar, 28 February 2026

From the defense attaché of the embassy in Beirut we received the following message that we would like to share with all of you.

It refers to the monument in Tyre where we ourselves have been so often in recent years to reflect on our comrades. For a moment of remembrance of those who made the highest sacrifice in this mission.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been active in Lebanon since 1978. In Tyre, there is a monument in memory of soldiers of different nationalities, including Dutch soldiers, who died during this mission. At the request of the Inspector-General of the Armed Forces, who in turn was approached by a number of relatives, we were asked to correct the incorrect initials, surnames, ranks and dates of death on the monument. In our capacity as Defence Attaché Office (DAO) in Beirut, we have taken up this work.

During the work, the inscriptions were completely restored and recolored to prevent color differences. In addition, the monument has been thoroughly cleaned, graffiti removed, the surrounding area refurbished and the flagpole restored. The monument looks dignified and cared for again, which is underlined by the grateful reactions of relatives. The importance of continuing to maintain monuments like this by interested countries is becoming even greater now that UNIFIL will end its mission at the end of this year and will therefore leave Lebanon.
