Enschede, 25 june 2025
At the end of June, we, the board of Veterans for Lebanon,
were present at the Sheltersuit donor event in Enschede. We were invited by Anne Smit, the driving force behind this inspiring foundation that is now also active internationally.
Sheltersuit arose from a wonderful initiative: unique, multifunctional suits are made from used sleeping bags and other circular materials. A Sheltersuit is a warm jacket with a matching bag, which can easily be transformed into a complete protective suit. These suits offer people who live on the streets protection from the cold and wind — and are unfortunately still badly needed.
Donations make the difference
Sheltersuit runs largely on volunteers and donations. Thanks to this support, the suits can be distributed directly to people in need. For example, Sheltersuit recently donated 90 suits to us, Veterans for Lebanon.
We took them in an aid container to Beirut, where they ended up with homeless people and refugees who were forced to live on the streets. We also distributed Sheltersuits in mountain villages and remote valleys around the city. We passed on thirty suits to the Light of Dawn Foundation, led by Mirjam Polak. Thanks to her network, these were able to end up in southern Lebanon, where many houses had been destroyed during a short but fierce war between Hezbollah and Israel.
