Chateau Beaufort again in the shadow of conflict

Nabatieh Governate, Lebanon, May 31, 2026

As the board of the Veterans for Lebanon Foundation, it touches us personally to see what is currently happening in South Lebanon.

Until the end of 2023, we have organized several return trips with our foundation for veterans who have served in Lebanon. One of the regular destinations during these trips was the impressive Crusader castle: Chateau Beaufort.

For many of us, this is not just a historical monument. The castle, which has its origins in the time of the Crusaders and has played a strategic role for centuries, is also a tangible reminder of a period that occupies an important place in our lives. From the walls of Beaufort, you look out over a beautiful landscape, but at the same time you feel the history and the many conflicts that have marked this region.

During our visits, we saw how parts of the castle had been carefully restored. It gave us hope that this special place would not only remain a reminder of war, but could also become a symbol of recovery, culture and tourism. That is precisely why it saddens us that Chateau Beaufort is once again in the news due to military developments and that the castle has once again fallen into the hands of Israeli troops.

For us as veterans, places like Beaufort are more than stones and walls. They represent memories of the people we met, the experiences we have had and the relationship we have built with Lebanon. This bond has only strengthened over the years through our humanitarian activities and the contacts we maintain with the people of southern Lebanon.

In this difficult time, we think of all the inhabitants of the region who are once again confronted with uncertainty, loss and the consequences of violence. Our foundation remains committed to providing humanitarian aid to the people who need it most and continues to hope for a future where historic sites like Chateau Beaufort are no longer the scene of conflict, but a source of connection and remembrance.

"Anyone who has ever served in southern Lebanon understands that some places never let you go. Chateau Beaufort is such a place for many of us."
